History

The current capitol building is the third such building in the state’s history. Construction of the Italian Renaissance style structure was completed in 1888. Standing at an impressive 302 feet and five stories high, the structure is taller than the United States Capitol building and one of the tallest state capitols in the country. The building was officially opened and dedicated on April 1, 1888, which is San Jacinto Day. The holiday celebrates the Battle of San Jacinto, in which Texas defeated Mexico to win its independence.
