The History

The Sixth Street Historic District has been listed in the National Register of Historic places ever since 1975. In the 1800s the street was the main way into town and was called Pecan St. It was right near the railroad track and welcomed visitors to the town with its many saloons and shops.

Famous for being progressive, the Austin landmark was far ahead of the rest of Texas in both technology and culture. In the 1890s E.M. Scarbrough erected Austin’s first skyscraper, The Scarbrough Building, to house his eponymous department store. Although the south had a reputation for being racist, Sixth Street had businesses owned by people of every different nationality.
