History
The Mayfield Park is named for Mary Mayfield, whose father bought the cottage and grounds hundreds of years ago. Mary Mayfield later married Dr. Milton Gutsch and the two moved into the cottage and developed the gardens, ponds and stone walls, which have all been preserved. The peacocks you’ll see today are the descendants of the Gutsche’s, who received their first birds as gifts from friends. The City of Austin later took over the gardens and now operates it as a public park.
Volunteer Gardens
While some of the Mayfield Park is maintained by city crews, many parts have been developed by local volunteer gardeners who have “adopted” plots. They plant only flowers, shrubs and trees that keep with the garden’s theme and feel, so everything melds together beautifully. So while you enjoy these historic grounds, you’ll also be able to appreciate the work and expertise of local gardeners who love the garden just as much as you will.
