Not all vacations need to be dedicated to swimming, playing golf, or simply relaxing by the pool on hot summer days. Sometimes your inner history buff demands to be let out to explore and learn! We’re not always satisfied with simply admiring the architecture of that beautiful building; we want to know when it was built and what purposes it served over the years! If this describes you and you find yourself turned in the direction of our favorite city on earth, Austin, Texas, our guide to a historical journey to Austin will ensure that you get all your questions answered!

Battle of the Bars

Yes, barhopping can be considered a part of your historical journey when you learn that there are two local bars claiming the title of oldest drinking spots in town. Well, it’s time to order a ride share and test out both places! Start with the Historic Scoot Inn, located at 1308 E 4th Street. This local hot spot has been in business since 1871 and has been hosting live music for years. Our second choice, Scholz Garten, bills itself as Austin’s oldest drinking establishment as well as the oldest operating business in all of the great state of Texas! Located at 1607 San Jacinto Boulevard, this bar has been in business since 1866, and if you are a University of Texas, the gardens are the only place in town for celebrations of U of T wins! The two bars are filled to the brim with all your favorite beverages, but the drink of choice has always been a frosty beer; nothing goes better with the live music performed on a cozy stage inside and a much larger one outside!

Remembering the Alamo

Although the Alamo can be found just under 100 miles away in San Antonio, the Messenger of the Alamo, Susanna Dickinson, once lived here, and her modest home located at 411 E Fifth Street is now a museum. Open from noon until 5:00 Pm Wednesdays through Sundays, the museum provides a fascinating look into the lives of early Texans and is also a monument to the historic women of our frontier who sacrificed so much to be able to enjoy life in the greatest state of the nation!

A Night at the Theater

The Paramount Theater at 713 Congress Avenue has been an integral part of Austin history since opening day in 1915. Originally built to be a vaudeville house, this beautiful revival style building features a grand stage in its auditorium and is where many films have premiered over the years. Today it’s a live performance venue and is worth a visit during your stay in Austin!
