When you think of Texas, the first thing that comes to mind is probably not sushi. However, sometimes you get a craving for the stuff no matter where you are. Uchi, located at 801 S Lamar Boulevard in Austin, offers a menu filled with all of your favorite sushi dishes, and it is one of the best restaurants in Austin, TX.

Uchi is the Japanese word for house, and the restaurant is located in an old South Austin bungalow. All of the fish you will eat at this restaurant comes from sustainable sources and they still procure the best seafood from around the world.

The atmosphere is casual and most of the guests are walk-ins, but if you have an exceptionally large party, you may want to make a reservation. Uchi is a great place to hold a private party and they can accommodate up to 45 people.

The Best Sushi at Uchi

Chef Tyson Cole studied sushi making in Tokyo, New York, and Austin. He combines international ingredients with traditional recipes. You will find something to sate your taste buds whether you like hot or cool sushi. Be sure to try a spicy, Crunch Tuna Roll that comes with avocado and chili. The Biendo Roll is an interesting combination of tempura shrimp and red grapes. The Mapo Dufo is a delightfully spicy dish that contains fried tofu and shitake ragout.

Vegetarians will have plenty to eat at this eclectic restaurant. The Yasai Mushi is a spicy combination of the hot Thai soup tom yum, braised greens and maitake. Be sure to combine the Nasu Eggplant Roll with the rich and cool Avocado Roll.

Desserts and Drinks

Uchi offers some tasty nonalcoholic beverages, such as a rotation of honey-sweetened lemonade, Mexican Coke, and Ramune, which is a Japanese soda. If you like a little sake with your sushi, be sure to try the Dewatsuru, which is made with toffee, cinnamon, and butterscotch, or the Seikyo, which contains cantaloupe, butterscotch, and baking soda.

The best of the desserts include coconut tapioca with blueberries and the Honey Toast Sundae that comes with ice cream, brioche, and cashew praline.
