Zilker Park is an anchor for Austin’s downtown area, and this area comes alive with twinkling lights during the Austin Trail of Lights event held throughout December. This twinkling wonderland is best explored on foot, with lighted tunnels to walk through and displays to examine. More than 2 million lights cast their brilliance upon Austin during the Austin Trail of Lights! Bring along a cup of hot chocolate to sip as you meander down the 1.25-mile trail. It is held from December 8-23, 2022.

Holiday Performances

Austin is known for its spectacular live performances, so why not experience some of its music and drama culture while you are here? Austin Ballet puts on a yearly performance of The Nutcracker along with accompaniment from the Austin Symphony Orchestra, held at The Long Center. Watch the character of Ebenezer Scrooge transform as you take in a performance of A Christmas Carol at ZACH Theater. Whether it’s your first experience with these productions or a yearly tradition, you will appreciate the element of creativity and culture experienced at the theater!

Christmas Shopping

If you haven’t yet crossed everyone off your Christmas shopping list, it isn’t too late. The Austin shopping scene has much to offer, from upscale shops selling the latest fashions to special holiday markets that pop up throughout the season offering unique local wares. Consider visiting some of the local craft fairs and markets, where you can not only pick up unique items for the loved ones on your list, but also help support local makers and artists. The Blue Genie Art Bazaar is open from Black Friday to Christmas Eve, keeping you covered for the entire shopping season. Here you will find creations and products from over 200 local artists and makers, so you are sure to find something for everyone on your list. Art, ceramics, paintings, and sculpture, among other treasures, are just a few of the gift items that can be found at the Bazaar. The German-Texan Christmas Market is another Austin shopping favorite. The market is decorated with authentic German Christmas ornaments imported from Germany, giving it a special feel. Sip spiced hot wine as you browse! You will also find Austin’s best shopping venues such as 2nd Street District, South Congress Avenue, and The Domain to have a festive atmosphere throughout the Christmas season.
