Music at the Austin Texas Bat Festival

Austin is known as the live music capital of the world, and this year’s Bat Fest offers music from an eclectic selection of regional bands. The Ying Yang Twins are a hip-hop group out of New Orleans. They gained notoriety when they worked with Brittany Spears on her album, “In the Zone.” Ray Willie Hubbard is a comedian and musician. His songs are about con men, street people, and ruffians. He has worked with such folk-rock greats as Lucinda Williams, Eric Church, and Patty Griffin. Flatland Cavalry is a country band that hails from Lubbock, Texas. They have recently released their second album, “Homeland Insecurity.” which is themed around the idea of enjoying the present.

The Emergence

The bats tend to emerge just before dusk. The sky turns black as they go on their nightly hunt for food. August is one of the best times to see the bats, as their cubs are just beginning to fly on their own. The emergence lasts for about half an hour and makes for a great social media video.

Bat Costume Contest

If you are feeling creative, you may want to put together a bat costume and join the annual contest that the event hosts. The first prize is $100 for both the best children’s costume and the best adult costume.
