The African American Quality of Life Initiative was started to help bring some R&B, neo-soul, gospel, and jazz into the pits of Austin. The first Urban Music Festival took place on April 8th, 2006 to the celebration and has been an annual event since then. The Urban Music Festival is the only R&B festival in Austin, taking place around Texas Relays, the largest African American tourism weekend. The festival typically draws around 9,000 attendees from all over the world.

The Urban Music Festival showcases incredible talent from Austin and all over the rest of the country. Headlining acts this year include the ever-popular Blackstreet, Stokely, Calvin Richardson, and Syleena Johnson. The 2019 Urban Music Festival is scheduled to take place Friday, March 29th and Saturday, March 30th. The music starts at 3:00pm Friday and 2:00pm Saturday giving you two full days of incredible music.
