A Mission to Help Youth
By the time he helped found One World Theater in Austin, Hartt Stearns was known in Austin for his work within bringing the arts into school assemblies and workshops. He and future wife Nada Stearns founded One World in 1993 as an outreach program aiming to get more local youth involved in the arts.
In 1999, the organization opened as a fully-fledged, 300-seat theater. One World Theater‘s villa-style building is nestled in the hills of central Texas and is made 85-percent out of Styrofoam!
One World Theater still continues its mission to bring the arts to youth. The theater gives discounted and free tickets to students who couldn’t otherwise afford the experience. It hosts free theater and music classes to youth from underserved populations, helps deployed parents see their youth perform in theater via video, brings artists into schools and provides youth scholarships to the Berkeley School of Music.
Music and Live Art
Musical performances happen throughout the year and with artists from all over the world, from every genre—classical, rock, jazz, country, folk, rock and more. You name it, they’ve got it.
One of the most unique performances to happen at One World Theater in Austin is the live art event with painter Rolando Diaz. During select music performances, Diaz paints his unique works live, and the piece is auctioned off at the end of the show. Proceeds benefit the One World Children’s Outreach Program.
