Check Out the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

HomeAustin AttractionsCheck Out the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

You may imagine Austin as a flat, dry, barren landscape, and while yes, it is a bit dry and very hot, it’s not barren. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center proves that. Visit the Center to ooh and awe at the beauty of the Texas landscape and have a picnic in one of the most beautiful spots in Texas.

Hundreds of Acres of Native Plants

The Center’s beauty isn’t limited to wildflowers; here, you’ll find hundreds of acres of native plants, from majestic native oak trees to blankets of purple sage. The Center includes 284 acres of gardens, woodlands, and savannas with more than 800 species of native Texas plants.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin is located on the campus of the University of Austin, a complement to the library and public affairs center that is dedicated to Lady Bird Johnson’s husband, former President Lyndon B. Johnson. Lady Bird Johnson established the Center in 1982 with actress Helen Hayes on sixty acres of undeveloped land in East Austin.

The Center has continued to grow and now includes 237 acres of land used for the expansion of the university campus. The added land has allowed the university to do larger-scale research on the local ecology and landscape.

Educational and Relaxing

In 2014, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center opened the Luci and Ian Family Garden, intended to be a relaxing, fun and interactive way for children to experience and explore the natural world. The garden includes a native shrub maze, giant tree stumps to climb on and around, a grotto with caves and a waterfall, math-themed hopscotch, and a creek with dinosaur footprints and water activities.

This is the perfect place for a summer or spring picnic. Lay out your blanket, unpack the strawberries and sandwiches and relax among fields of wildflowers.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center has a café, gift store, and beautiful halls and courtyards that are perfect for weddings and other events. As you stroll the Center grounds, you can learn about the plants you see. The website also is a great place to read up on the flowers, trees, and shrubs growing in and around Austin.
