It may be surprising to some that a quirky Texas town such as Austin is also home to amazing hiking trails, but it’s true! In a city known for its music festivals, craft brews, and being just plain weird, there is also plenty of places to explore nature as well. Whether you are a casual hiker who just wants to see a bit of nature, or you are a serious enthusiast, there is a hiking trail in Austin for you! Here is our list of top Austin hiking trails.

Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve

This trail is perfect for families or casual hikers. The Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve is a relatively short loop, just 2.5 miles roundtrip, and the trail is easily marked, making it a breeze to navigate even if you are not used to hiking. There are several different paths along the trail, so you can have a full day of exploring or come back, again and again, to get a different experience every time. Your reward for your journey is some great views overlooking the city of Austin, and the namesake basin feels like a cool oasis after your hike. Bonus: this trail is located off of Loop 360 and is very easy to access! Unfortunately, no dogs allowed, so leave your pooch at home for this one.

St. Edwards Park

This trailhead is perfect for those seeking a little bit of solitude outside the city of Austin. There are two main loops through St. Edwards Park; take the hill route for more of a challenge, or follow the creek for a more casual hike. The hill trail features a rope swing and a swimming hole, while both paths offer amazing views and waterfalls. The loop is 2 to 4 miles, depending on which route you take. Dogs are also allowed but must be on a leash at all times.

River Place Nature Trail

River Place Nature Trail may be well marked, but it is a rigorous hike that may not be suitable for beginners. Nonetheless, this is a beautiful and lush trail that offers a reprieve from the heat during the summer months. Large, shady trees and a creek make this feel like a little slice of heaven! This 5.5 miles up and back trail reaches higher elevations than anywhere in Austin and is sure to get your heart rate up! This is the perfect trail to take in the beauty of nature and get a great workout!
