You may not think of visiting a university while you’re touring another city, but a campus as big, beautiful and historic as the University of Texas at Austin is worth the stop. UT-Austin has grown into a world-class university. It was opened in 1883 with one building, eight professors, one proctor, and 221 students.

Today, the University of Texas at Austin is a city in itself. Home to more than 51,000 students and 3,000 teaching faculty, it’s one of the largest universities in the nation. On a 431-acre campus, UT-A has 17 libraries, more than 10 million books, and four museums.

While visiting, we suggest you visit the Blanton Museum of Art. It’s the largest and most comprehensive collection of art in Central Texas and is the city’s main art collection. It houses nearly 18,000 pieces and rotating exhibits year-round.

UT Austin Acclaimed Academics

UT Austin ranks highly for several of its academic programs. The University of Texas at Austin has the No. 1 undergraduate accounting program and ranks highly for marketing and chemical and civil engineering. Famous Longhorn alumni include actors Matthew McConaughey and Marcia Gay Harden, journalists like Bill Moyers and Walter Cronkite, and politicians like Sam Rayburn, James Baker, and Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Longhorn Football

The university has a long, proud football history, often ranking as one of the best teams in the Big 12. If you love football and you’re into bizarre facts, then you’ll love to learn that the so-called “Largest Bass Drum in the World” belongs to the UT Austin football team. Big Bertha, as the drum was lovingly named, is nearly 100 years old and stands eight feet in diameter, forty-one inches wide, and over 10 feet high when mounted on her carriage. Today, after several refurbishments, Bertha is still being escorted out onto the field by her very own “Bertha Crew.”

Longhorn loyalists are loud and proud. They even have Smokey the Cannon to shoot off at kickoffs. From fight songs to Big Bertha the bass drum to Smokey the Cannon, this school is proud of its tradition.

Whether you’re here in Austin to view the fabled Bertha or to experience the arts and culture, you’ll find both at UT-A.
